Come out and help beautify Nederland Elementary School.  Volunteers will be cleaning-up, landscaping, and working with PROSAB on the trail that links the school to other Nederland areas, including the Community Center, Mud Lake, and the Ice and Tennis Park.

Join Boulder County Forestry Education and Outreach Coordinator Ryan Ludlow, for the first installment of the new Boulder County Forest Health Stewardship Educational Training Series.

A Free Mountain Pine Beetle Workshop is scheduled for Sunday Oct. 4 at the Nederland Community Center.  Representatives from Boulder County, Gilpin County, US Forest Service and Colorado State Forest Service will help you improve your skills at identifying recently hit trees and provide strategies that may reduce the impacts of bark beetles on your backyard forest. Fall is a great time to survey your backyard and cut newly infested trees.

Come welcome and meet a group of French visitors who will be staying with local host families for two weeks in September.  Bring a dish to share and enjoy some local live music at Chipeta Park!  For more info, contact Laurence Delaunay Masters (303-258-7037).

WindFest is a youth and family-friendly event celebrating community, sustainable energy, and that mountain element that plagues us in the winter: Wind. WindFest will include wind art, kite flying, kite making workshops, kiteflying competitions, and other wind and sustainable energy booths and activities.

Nature Hike for Seniors

Mud Lake Open Space; 2 The last Thursday of every month, Boulder County Parks and Open Space hosts a nature hike for seniors at a county park. Programs include information about an area's history, wildlife and current resource management projects. For more information and directions to open space properties,  please call 303-678-6214.

Oh Deer - And Other Ungulates 

Caribou Ranch Open Space; 2 miles north of Nederland on County Road 126; meet at parking lot kiosk. Join volunteer naturalists for a fall hike in the high country and learn about and look for signs of the three members of the deer family that call Caribou Ranch home - mule deer, American elk, and moose. We will hike about three miles roundtrip over easy terrain, and learn more about the natural history, behavior, and habitat needs of these hoofed mammals (ungulates). And, we'll also find out who is making those eerie, high-pitched squeals. Be prepared for weather conditions at 8,500 feet.

Building on two years of success, celebrate National Public Lands Day and enjoy the magnificent fall colors in the mountains of Boulder County.  Learn about quaking aspen ecology while working to improve valuable wildlife habitat on open space near Nederland.  Unfortunately, healthy aspen stands are disappearing across Colorado for a variety or reasons, including fire suppression, cattle and elk grazing, drought, and disease.  We cannot control all of these factors, but we can improve our forests by mimicking natural disturbance.  Volunteers will use hand saws and loppers to clear and pile small conifers, making room for new aspen growth.  Bring your camera to capture the remarkable views of the Indian Peaks and fall colors.

This project runs from 9am-2:30pm and a free lunch will be provided.   Minimum age is 14 with adult supervision.  To register please email WildWorkVolunteers@BoulderCounty.org or call 303-678-6216 by September 23.
